5th Pioneers - HMAT Aeneas
Members of the 5th Pioneers, 10th Reinforcements prior to boarding HMAT Aeneas (A60). Identified are: second row, (sitting on his kitbag, which shows a map of Australia and his service number and smoking a cigarette) 3939 Private (Pte) Carl Tura Hergstrom, of Port Pirie, SA. Pte Hergstrom was born at Sundsvall, Sweden, and was killed in action in France on 3 July 1918 as a member of 48th Battalion. On Pte Hergstrom's left, also sitting on his kitbag is 3865 Pte William Kennedy, a farmer of Streaky Bay, West Coast, SA. Pte Kennedy was born in Balty Bay, County Monaghan, Ireland and was killed in action in France on 3 May 1918 also as a member of 48th Battalion. On the second right, crouching, 3795 Pte (Acting Sergeant) Walter Owen Lewis, engineering surveyor of Semaphore, SA. Behind and slightly right of Pte Lewis is 3944 Pte Edward Sebastian Tonkes, engineer of Ethalton, SA.

Outdoor portrait of a group of 25 unidentified allied Prisoners of War (POW) at a POW camp in Stendal, Germany. This photograph is amongst a collection by 3103 Private (Pte) Frederick Steinle, 10th Battalion, from Streaky Bay, South Australia who enlisted at the age of 21 on 17 June 1915 and embarked for overseas on 14 September 1915 aboard HMAT Ballarat. He was wounded and captured at Pozieres, France, on 22 August 1916 and held as a Prisoner of War (POW) in a number of camps in Germany including Munster in Westphalia, Stendal, Wittenberg and Merseburg. Pte Steinle was repatriated to England on 1 January 1919 and arrived back in Australia on 5 June 1919.

HARPER William Allan
Studio portrait of five soldiers. One is identified probably as: 1860 Private (Pte) William Allan Harper, 13th Reinforcements, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, of Streaky Bay, SA, aged 21 years. Pte Harper enlisted on 27 September 1915 and embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Borda on 11 January 1916. He returned to Australia on 15 May 1919 with the 14th Field Artillery Brigade.

Three in the group are wearing Australian slouch hats and another three are wearing Australian Rising Sun collar badges. Two pet dogs are held in the front row. Studio portrait of Australian ex-Prisoners of War (POW) 1568 Private (Pte) Patrick O'Connor, 14th Battalion, from Monbulk, Victoria (on left) and 1995 Pte Philip Warburton Symonds, 48th Battalion, from Merghiny, South Australia (on right). Pte O'Connor enlisted on 21 December 1914 and embarked for overseas on 19 February 1915 aboard HMAT Runic. He was captured at Gallipoli on 8 August 1915 and interned in Turkey before being transferred to Austria in December 1917. He arrived in England in February 1918 with his right leg amputated. Pte O'Connor arrived back in Australia on 10 March 1919. Pte Symonds enlisted at the age of 23 on 1 March 1916 and embarked for overseas on 13 July 1916 aboard HMAT Seang Bee. He was wounded and captured at Bullecourt, France on 11 April 1917 and subsequently had his left leg amputated. He was held in German POW camps until he was repatriated to Holland on 2 January 1918. He arrived in England on 8 January 1918 and received further surgery. Pte Symonds arrived back in Australia on 29 January 1919. Photograph was taken in England.
