The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate 11th December 1916
Mr. David John Whyborn, received the sad news by wire that his eldest son, Lieutenant Benjamin Whyborn, had been kllled in France on the 6th November, 1916. The brave young man was at the time of his death about 22 years of age, having enlisted in April, 1915, from Denial Bay, as sergeant of A Company, 27th Battalion, A.I.F. He was a young man of exemplary character, an active member of the Young Mens' Improvement Society, and a very deep and thoughtful reader, and might have made a name for himself had he chosen the selfish part and remained at home; but, having come from the good old stock, his grandfather having taken part in the Crimean War, he heard the call of duty and nobly responded to it. He was among the first in the Denial Bay district to take up arms in the defence of his King, home, and country, and received his commission on the field. Although not one of the first to land on the shores of Gallipoli, he arrived there in the early part of the fighting and remained there till the evacuation, coming through the campaign without a scratch. He was one of the first contingent of Anzacs to land in Marseilles, France and saw some tough fighting before he received his fatal wound. As an officer he was highly respected by his comrades. To his bereaved parents and relatives we extend our deepest sympathy in their hour of trial, and in the words of the poet, we conclude with the lines
"Too far away thy grave to see, But not too far away to think of thee.
