OBITUARY
Mr. Charles/ Thom, a former Streaky Bay resident, died at the Mount Gambier Hospital on Saturday. He was aged 80.
Born at Glasgow, Scotland, Mr. Thom came to Australia 35 years ago. He served in World War I in the 5th Pioneers, for four years.
He conducted a wheat property at Streaky Bay for many years, and became very well-known in that area. He was a Past Worshipful Master of the Freemason Lodge in that town. Due to ill-health, Mr. Thom and his wife disposed of their property and came to live with their son-in-law and daughter (Mr. and Mrs. R. M.Chant) of Kongorong three years ago. Another daughter (Mrs. Lorna Mavis Thomas) resides at Mingbool. Mrs. Thom survives.
Mr. Thom was a member of the Mount Gambier Sub-Branch of the R.S.L. for the past two years. Members of the Sub-Branch attended the funeral which took
place this morning. The Secretary (Mr. E. Messer) read the R.S.L. burial service and placed a poppy in the grave. The last rites were performed by Rev. J. H.
Crossley, and Mr. Ern James was in charge of funeral arrangements. The R.S.L. flag outside the Town Hall was flown at half-mast today as a tribute.
West Coast Sentinel (Streaky Bay, S.A.) 8-2-1950
The Late Charles Thom
People throughout these districts will regret to learn, of the passing of Mr. Charles Thorn who, until he and his wife took up residence in Mount Gambier
several years ago, had lived in and near Streaky Bay for many years. The late gentleman died in the Mount Gambier Hospital on January 29. He was 80 years
of age. Mr. and Mrs. Thom and their daughters Chrissie and May came to Streaky Bay soon after they arrived from Scotland. Mr. Thom was first employed as a
blacksmith by Mr. 0. M. Wilcock, and afterwards carried on this occupation on his own account. Some years later he sold out to the late Arthur Jackson, and
took up a small farm north-east of the town. The Thoms remained on this farm until fading health influenced Mr. Thom to dispose of it and retire to Mount
Gambier. The late Charlie Thom was highly respected by all who knew him. He was a gentleman in the true sense and has often been alluded to as "one of Scotland's best." One of his main interests was Freemasonry, and over one period he did not miss a meeting of the Streaky Bay Lodge for 13 years. Mr. Thom was a member of the Streaky Bay R.S.L. after his return from World War I.
He leaves a widow, and daughters— Chris (Mrs. Chant) and Lorna, adopted (Mrs. C. Thomas), all of Mount Gambier.

West Coast Sentinel (Streaky Bay, S.A.) 30-6-1923
OBITUARY. The death took place at the Streaky Bay public hospital on Monday afternoon of William Charles, the only son of Mr C. H. Thomas, of Wirrulla. The deceased had been an inmate of the hospital ever since October 6 of last year, and his death was not unexpected. The late Mr Thomas saw active service during the recent war, and while away contracted illness on several occasions. It is quite evident that he never properly recovered from the trouble contracted whilst abroad, and it may by rightly said of him that he died for his country the same as many others did who gave up their lives whilst fighting. The deceased gentleman, who was thirty-nine years of age, was born at Long Plains, near Balaklava, where his father was engaged in farming pursuits. He came to the West Coast at the age of seventeen years, and was employed by Mr D. T. Kenny, at " Coolgrana." His father followed him to these parts twelve months later, and the two of them engaged in share farming in the Pimbaacla district. Mr Thomas, sen., took up land at Wirrulla in 1915, and they both went to work it. The call of the empire for more men proved too strong for the younger man, and in 1916 he enlisted, being attached to the 5th reinforcements of the 50th Battalion. He served with his unit for nearly three years, receiving his discharge on his return to Australia after armistice had been declared. Three times during his war service he had to be sent back from the line on account of sickness, which later developed into the trouble which ultimately was the cause of his death. The young man was a patient sufferer, although at times he was in great pain. All hope of a recovery was abandoned some time ago and last week it was realised that the end was near. Mr Thomas passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday afternoon. The funeral was conducted on Tuesday afternoon Rev. H. Davidson conducted a service at St. Augustine's Church, after which the remains were interred at the Streaky Bay cemetery. A fine tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased was the very large number of people from the Petina and Wirrulla districts who motored in to attend the last ceremony. A large concourse followed the casket to its last resting place, including about thirty returned soldiers, six of whom acted as pall-bearers. |

TUDOR - Killed in action in France, on April 5th, No. 2504, Private Stanley Richard Tudor, 48th Battalion, third dearly beloved son of R. and S.J. Tudor, Charra, aged 20 years and six months.
He left his home, his native land,
To help Australia's gallant band.
His heart was brave, he knew no fear,
And freedom's cause to him was dear.
The soul of his country swells with pride
With the deeds he did, and the death he died,
His manly form rests in a foreign grave
But his name will live with Australia's brave
Great is our sorrow: but God knows best;
He has taken our loved one home to rest.
- Inserted by his loving father and mother, sister and brothers.
