Awarded Military Medal
Promulgated Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 12th February 1919 - page 272 5th July 1918 - This man working in conjunction with No. 7129 Private Roder, showed extraordinary daring during the operations against Vaire and Hamel Woods, East of Corbie, on the morning of the 4th July 1918. He was always well in the lead, keeping close up to the barrage. When the barrage "lifts" occurred, he was always the first to rush the ? encountered. On several occasions, he was so quickly into the enemy posts, and kept the crews of enemy machine guns so busy defending themselves from his personal onslaught, that they had no chance of getting their guns into action. He personally bayoneted several and enabled his comrades to mop up the balance with a minimum of loss to our own troops. His fighting qualities on this occasion were superb. He is strongly recommended for distinction. |

The late Mr. James Edward Rowbottom, whose death under tragic circumstances as the result of a motor car accident, at Lindoch Valley, near Adelaide, was recorded in yesterday's issue, saw. extensive military service during the great war. He enlisted in 1914 in the 10th Battalion (South Australian), A. I. F. and took part in the operations in Gallipoli, on the Suez Canal, and in Mesopotamia and France. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant from the A.I.F. after service covering a period of 5 years and a day. He was wounded on three occasions. His father, who predeceased him by several years, was armourer-sergeant-major in the ) Welsh Infantry Regiment (Regulars). A brother of the deceased is principal foreman on His Majesty's gun wharf, Chatham, England, and his mother and sister live in Kent.
His only relative living in Australia is Constable Henry Walter Rowbottom, who has been stationed ,on the eastern goldfields for a number of years, and who resides in Kalgoorlie. These brothers had been looking forward to an early meeting, but fate decreed otherwise. The deceased, who was a carpenter by trade, had just completed a job in the country and was on his way back to Adelaide, where he had built a home in the expectation of being married shortly. He was 37 years of age at the time of his death.
