The Advertiser 18th November 1918
Corporal W. P. PICKER, No. 4533, 10th Battalion, who was killed in action somewhere in France, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Picker, of Hynam. After recovering from his wounds he went to Ireland on furlough, and spent an enjoyable time with his relations and friends. On returning to England he attended a bombing and gas school, where he was most successful, and sailed for France on February 27, 1918. He was wounded again in August of this year, and after recovering returned to the firing line, where he was killed in action on September 18. The deceased soldier was 23½ years of age. |

This N.C.O. has displayed exceptional initiative and bravery during the operations of the past six months. His determination and endurence have helped materially towards the success of these operations. During the operations at Allaines, East of Amiens, on September 2nd 1918, after all his company officers had become casualties, he took charge of his company and remained in charge until the Battalion was relieved three days later. During this battle he did excellent work in rallying the remnants of his company and pushing forward to the final objective. His determination and disregard for personal safety was a wonderful example to his tired men at a very critical period.

Promulgated Commonwealth of Australia Gazette dated 14th December 1916 - page 3389
9th August 1916 - 6th Field Company Australian Engineers
For conspicuous gallantry in guiding infantry working parties at Pozieres on the 6th August through heavy artillery fire though wounded by shrapnel at 6pm he remained at his duty for another 5½ hours until he collapsed, setting a most praiseworthy example of devotion to duty.
13th August 1916 - 6th Field Company Australian Engineers
On 7th August after being in charge of working parties improving communications forward of Pozieres from 6am and being wounded about 4pm he insisted on remaining on duty until midnight, when he collapsed. Capt. Murray, 13th A.I.F reports that the work was carried out under heavy shell fire and that by his personal example, steadiness and skilful directions of the work Corporal Place was of the utmost assistance. Considering the vital importance of digging communications during this phase of operations and the almost invariable dis-organisation of infantry working parties, where bereft of engineer supervision, it is felt that the action of Cpl. Place cannot be too highly commended.
The Advertiser 21st November 1917
Lieutenant H. L.PLACE, of Murat Bay, was the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Place. He came to Adelaide to enlist for active service on his 21st birthday. He left Australia in August, 1915, as sapper in the 6th Field Engineers. In 1916 he gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal in France, and shortly afterwards was promoted to second lieutenant. He was killed in action on October 9. He was a fine manly fellow, and was generally respected. He was a nephew of Mr. S. Trestrail, of Clare, and a cousin of Detective Trestrail, of Adelaide. |
