For gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed complete disregard for his own safety throughout the action and his devotion to duty and skilfull handling of the guns contributed largely to the excellent defence of the Company sector.

Late Cpl. S.H. Mayfield
Cpl. Stanley Howard Mayfield, of the 8th Reinforcements, 32nd Battalion who died in Adelaide last week, was of a kindly, unassuming nature and was held in high esteem by all whom he came in contact. He served with distinction in the Boer War with the 4th South Australian Imperial Bushmen, for which he held two medals, and in that campaign was mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts. he was the second man to reach the Boer guns at Lindley - in the incident which gained Major Norton the D.S.O. and several of this men the corresponding distinction of D.C.M. At Vredefort he brought to safety a wounded officer, after two others had been shot down in attempting the rescue. Cpl. Mayfield was the only representative from South Australia who rode in the royal escort at the Coronation of King Edward VII.
Soon after the outbreak of the present war he resigned a position of station manager at Streaky Bay and enlisted. Deceased, who was 38 years of age, has left a widow and three children.

West Coast Sentinel (Streaky Bay, S.A.) 25-1-1919
The sad news was telegraphed to Streaky Bay on Monday that Pte. G. Meffert had died in Adelaide of consumption. Pte. Meffert enlisted from Streaky Bay about three years ago, and while on active service was invalided to England suffering severely with trench feet. His health broke down while in England, and for a long while he was very ill. Eventually, he was sufficiently well enough to be sent home, and he arrived in Adelaide a few days before Christmas. During his illness in England he was attended to by another Streaky Bay soldier—Surgeon Lieut-Col. L. O. Betts, O.B.E. His arrival in Adelaide was somewhat unexpected, and his wife and family were not aware of his return until a wire was received from him direct. Mrs Meffert immediately proceeded to Adelaide, and was with him during the last days of his illness. The deceased soldier was widely respected on the West Coast, and the deepest sympathy is extended to his widow and four sons and two daughters. His enlistment for active service was a noble example of self-sacrifice. The fact that he left a wife and family of six children to go and fight for his country is one that calls for the highest admiration. |

During the operations South of Morlancourt near Albert, on the night 10/11th June 1918, these men acted as stretcher bearers. They worked most tirelessly and courageously, carrying wounded to the R.A.P. under most trying circumstances. The carry back was more than a mile, and they worked for five hours mostly under an enemy barrage of shell fire.

West Coast Sentinel (Streaky Bay, S.A.) 26-3-1943
DEATH OF MR. J. ALWYN MUDGE Mr. John Alwyn Mudge, JP, well known all over the West Coast and in Adelaide business circles, died at his residence, Glenelg, on Sunday last, in his 52nd year. He was the eldest son of the late Thomas and Catherine Mudge, and was born at Streaky Bay in 1891, and finished his education at St. Peter's College, Adelaide. In 1916 he joined the AIF and served in France until the end of the war, returning to Australia in 1919. He rejoined his father in his various enterprises, and married Jessie Hillam, daughter of the late G. W. Murray, of Yalata Station. Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Mudge made a trip to England and the Continent, visiting the battlefields in France. After the division of the Mudge estate in June, 1941, Mr. Alwyn Mudge owned Chilpenunda and Pinjerra, a grazing property adjoining Kondoolka Station, owned by Mrs. Mudge. In partnership with Mrs. Bellengor he also owned Yantanubie, Benbutter and Parraba. As a young man Mr. Mudge was an active interest in all sports, especially cricket, and he was a patron of the local golf club. A great lover of horses, he was not only patron of Streaky Bay Racing Club, but also raced on local and metropolitan courses. He owned at one time Pinjerra Lass and Gunstani, which won the Arnold Ferry Steeplechase at Port Adelaide in 1933, and ran into a place in the Great Eastern Steeplechase at Oakbank. A loyal churchman, he took a great interest in St. Augustine's Church of England at Streaky Bay, and was one of its best supporters, being for a long period minister's warden. Mr. Mudge was one of the prime movers in arranging for the construction of the swimming enclosure at Streaky Bay jetty, and took part in the abortive negotiations for a bowling green. Just before the present war broke out Mr. and Mrs. Mudge went for a trip to America and visited the World's Fair in New York, in fact, they were on their way home when hostilities began. Mr. Mudge was a Pastmaster of Streaky Bay Masonic Lodge, and was a valued member of the Mark Lodge and Royal Arch Chapter. For some years Mr. and Mrs. Mudge lived at their home in Maturin Road, Glenelg, but made frequent business visits to his home town—the last of those took place in October, 1942. Mr. Mudge had a very genial disposition and endeared himself to all who came into contact with him, and Streaky Bay and district will bee the poorer for his early demise. He was buried in the Mitcham Cemetery on Monday afternoon. During the past two years Mr. Mudge was patron of the local branch of the RS and SILA, but when a resident of the town he was a very active member, and for many years held excutive positions, including that of president. |

On 11th Sept. 1918 near Verguier N.W. of St. Quentin this N.C.O. showed conspicuous bravery and determined fighting ability during an attack by his platoon, without artillery support. During each successive bound in an advance of 1500 yards, Sergt. Mulroney was first to start forward, setting a magnificent example throughout. In the final stage he dashed forward over 200 yards of open ground, and was first man into the enemy trench, where he succeeded in killing two of the enemy before anyone else of the platoon got in. During a strong hostile counter-attack which followed he showed great courage under intense shellfire and handling his men with the utmost coolness, beat off the attack with loss to the enemy.
