BARRETT - In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Pte., J.C. Barrett, No. 3117, 8/50 Battalion, A.I.F., who was killed in action on September 27th, 1917. R.I.P. Somewhere in France is a sacred spot; It is a grave just newly made, And it is sheltering our boy from peril and ills, Of which life's battle is played, Somewhere in France he is laid to rest, His life's work truly done; Sacrifice for Liberty, ere life had scarce begun He has borne his cross, he has gained his crown. Though he lies in a far of grave, We think of his life a duty done - manly, selfish and brave -Inserted by his loving parents, sisters and brothers. |

Dr. Lionel Oxborrow Betts noted specialist in orthopadic surgery and stud master died yesterday at a private hospital. He was 56. He had attained great eminence in his profession. Born at Streaky Bay, he attended Way College and graduated in 1908. He began to practice at Maitland in 1909 and remained until the outbreak of the first world war. He served for five years overseas and in 1917 was awarded the OBE. On his return at the close of the war he practised at Semaphore where he remained until 1926, when he went to Liverpool to study orthopaedy under Sir Robert Jones. On his return to Adelaide in 1928 he became a bone specialist. He married Miss Beatrice Mills, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs S. Mills, of Beetaloo who survives. There are also a son and a daughter - Dr. W.J. Betts and Mrs J. Cohn, both of Adelaide. Dr Betts was a keen stud stock master and his Ryeland and Corriedale sheep studs were widely known throughout this and the eastern states. His Talungabee Ryeland flock founded in 1932 was regarded as one of the best in Australia. Championship honors and many class prizes were gained by rams and ewes at the Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne shows. The Corriedale flock was established in 1929 and although not so prominent in the interstate show rings the type and quality of the sheep have been highly regarded in South Australia. THE WEST COAST AMBULANCE
At Work in Egypt
A letter on Thursday acquaints us of the arrival in Egypt of Driver H. Brown, in charge of the West Coast Motor Ambulance. He writes from Gamrah, near Cairo, under date of February 24th, and states:- We were landed at Alexandria after five weeks on the water, having called at Fremantle, Colombo, Port Suez and Port Said. These are 'some' ports all right; tremendous amount of shipping, especially the two latter. We are established at Gamrah Australian Garage with several hundred other ambulances, lorries and touring cars, all gifts. We are doing district work now, attending to the surrounding hospitals, which are very numerous. Things are very quiet, and the boys are expecting orders to go to other parts of the war zone, and I need not say how anxious we are looking forward to orders to proceed to where there is something doing. Have seen lots of the Coast boys already.
